First Trimester Favorites
I rounded up all the products I’ve purchased, used and loved during the first trimester of this pregnancy. From vitamins to skincare to my holy grail pregnancy product, this first trimester favorites list has it all!
- PREGNANCY PILLOW. I bought this pillow when I was pregnant with Luca and I didn’t waste any time taking it out for this pregnancy. It’s U-shaped but kind of contours to your body. I’m a back sleeper which is a no-no past a certain point in pregnancy and this helps to encourage side sleeping. This pillow is my holy grail product, if there was one thing I needed over everything else.. it’s this pillow.
- PREGNANCY PILLOW COVER. The pillow doesn’t come with a cover so you have to purchase one separately if you want one. The pillow is huge and a little tricky to get in the cover but once you can figure out how to stuff it in it fits nicely. I have the floral print because my bedroom is super neutral and I love it.
- VITAMIN B6. I mentioned in my First Trimester Recap and Q&A that I used vitamin b6 to combat nausea. I didn’t know if it was truly helping until I forgot to take it and you better believe I didn’t forget again!
- PRENATAL VITAMIN. I started taking this prenatal vitamin before we starting trying for our first pregnancy. I had a preconception appointment with my OB and she recommended starting a prenatal vitamin regimen 3 months prior trying for pregnancy. Ry did a bunch of research (as always) and picked this vitamin because it’s a “raw whole foods” vitamin so it’s made with real fruits and vegetables and without synthetic binders or fillers or artificial flavors. It also has the active form of folate instead of folic acid. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate which can be more difficult for your body to absorb and utilize.
I’ve been taking 3 of them everyday for almost 3 years and I’ve never once had an issue. They are a bit more pricey than other prenatal options but they don’t have an after taste, don’t make me feel nauseous and I trust their ingredients. - OMEGA-3 FISH OIL. My prenatal does not have added omega-3 or DHA so I supplement with this fish oil. It has above the recommended EPA and DHA during pregnancy and doesn’t have a fishy aftertaste. The pills are huge though which is the only downside (I’m a wimp with pills but I’ll do anything for my babies).
- VITAMIN D3. We started taking vitamin d3 at the beginning of the year to help support our immune systems. Vitamin D is super important and my primary care physician told me that most adults are deficient! Who knew?! I’ve continued to take it during pregnancy for continued immune support but I also read that it can help with gestational diabetes. Doctors have found that “emerging evidence suggests that Vitamin D administration can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, but whether vitamin D supplementation can prevent GDM is unknown.” (source) I had diet-controlled gestational diabetes with Luca and although I’m more likely to have it this pregnancy, I like to think taking a vitamin d supplement may make a difference.
- THERMOFLASK. I love this water bottle. It holds 32 oz and keeps my water really cold. I had a hard time making sure I was staying hydrated in the first trimester mostly because plain water made me nauseous but this bottle definitely helped!
- The Ordinary “Buffet” I switched to pregnancy safe skincare as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I use https://www.15minutebeauty.com/ as my pregnancy product “handbook.” The writer is a mom and a doctor and evaluates almost every skincare and beauty brand you can think of for pregnancy safeness. If you’re pregnant and concerned about a product you’re using I highly recommend this site! I was using another The Ordinary product so I decided to see which of their products were safe for pregnancy and would give me the skin benefits I was looking for. The Buffet is an anti-aging product without retinol and has really helped with the texture of my skin.
- The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Another The Ordinary product — this one for moisture! I’ve struggled with some dry skin this pregnancy and this product has helped immensely. My skin is much more plump and hydrated since I started using it.
- COCONUT OIL. I think I’ve written about my love for coconut oil at least 3 other times on this blog. I use it for everything but I especially love it during pregnancy. I used coconut oil to help prevent stretch marks during my first pregnancy and started using it as soon as I found out I was pregnant this time around. I use it where my body is doing the most growing — my belly, hips, upper thighs, butt and boobs. Whether or not you are blessed with stretch marks is mostly genetic (thanks, Mom!) but you can help by keeping your skin moisturized from the inside out — water and a body oil!
- DRY BRUSHING BODY BRUSH. I read about the benefits of dry brushing and was immediately convinced (a marketer’s dream haha). Among the benefits are smoother and softer skin, cellulite reduction and improved skin circulation. My skin was weirdly dry in the first trimester so I purchased the dry brush as a safe exfoliator with potential added benefits. AND I LOVE IT. It’s a weird sensation to get used to in the beginning but my skin is no longer dry AND I’ve had to shave my legs far less than normal. I use the dry brush before I shower than I coconut oil all over my body while my skin is still wet and it’s done wonders for the look and feel of my skin.
- DOUBLE LAYER CROP TOPS. I love these crop tops. . I’m team please don’t make me wear a bra ,which I can get away with not pregnant (thanks, Mom again!) but I’ve grown at least a cup size so far and need more support. These crop tops serve the purpose as a bra because they’re double layered but don’t have any extra padding or underwire so they aren’t restrictive.
