Five Favorites Friday

It’s finally the last day of January. Every year January feels like it’s 675 days long. We’ve all seen the memes. But this week went by super fast, I can’t believe it’s Friday and new month starts tomorrow! Happy weekending and happy February!

  1. Our waffle maker. I’d been wanting a new waffle maker for forever. We were gifted a small Flyers waffle maker when we moved to Maryland 7 years ago. It was fine to satisfy the waffle craving but in lieu of the typical waffle indentations (I googled this and they could be called “pockets”) there was the Flyer’s logo in the middle of the waffle which definitely didn’t hold up to syrup or fruit or ice cream or any topping really and who eats a plain waffle?! It was also extremely difficult to clean because you couldn’t remove the plates so more times than not when I wanted waffles.. I made pancakes. Ry gave me this new one for Christmas and I’ve used it at least twice a week since then. I actually have a waffle post planned for next week with some of my favorite recipes but if you’re looking for a new waffle maker — this is it.
  2. Ankle weights. These ankle weights have made my workouts so much better. I don’t do anything crazy — just 20 minutes of of floor leg/arm/ab workouts and squats — but adding the ankle weights (and upping my hand weights to 8 lb each) has helped me get more muscle definition and I feel stronger.
  3. The Hercules soundtrack. The first time Luca heard “Zero to Hero” he lost his s&*t. He danced and spun and aggressively shook his arms and overall had the time of his life. It became a sure way of brightening his mood. He had never seen the movie but LOVED the song. We branched out to listen to the whole soundtrack and “The Gossip Truth” and “A Star is Born” received similar fanfare. We finally watched the movie back in November and he was hooked. The colors, the music, the voices — he loved it (for the 2 minute intervals he would stop and watch it). We still listen to the soundtrack more than we watch the movie but needless to say, we’re big Hercules fans over here.
  4. Grapefruit. I picked up a bag of organic grapefruits on a whim last weekend because they were on sale and they looked good at the time. I like grapefruit flavored things but I’ve never been one to eat a grapefruit (nor do I really eat oranges). I LOVE them. I’ve been eating them plain and squeezing the juice into my water. So good.
  5. Reading with Ry. Last weekend instead of watching TV, Ry and I laid on the couch and read our own books. I love reading. I would pick reading a book over most other activities. I’ve always been that way — I would stay up almost all night reading even when I was a child. I always get so attached to the characters and the scenes and I just truly love fiction books. Ry just recently started reading for fun. He’s a forever student and is constantly reading self-help, motivation, non-fiction and programming books but he never gave fiction a chance until last year. I think reading together on the weekends is something we’ll make a habit of. #wildpartyanimaldiehls
